The Mitsubishi Pajero is making a comeback, five years after the Japanese carmaker discontinued one of its most recognisable SUVs. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the fifth-generation Pajero will make its global debut on September 2, reviving a nameplate that has been absent since 2021. Much is still under wraps ahead of the reveal, but the company has begun teasing what drivers can expect, including the return of some features familiar to long-time owners.
First launched in 1982, the Pajero became one of Mitsubishi’s most successful models, with more than 3.25 million sold worldwide. It built a strong reputation for off-road ability while becoming a mainstay on UAE roads, where its practicality and accessible pricing won a loyal following in a market dominated by large SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol.
After almost four decades, its run came to an end. Production in Japan stopped in 2019, followed by overseas markets in 2021, amid declining sales, stricter emissions rules and Mitsubishi’s growing focus on newer and electrified models. Its return now points to renewed appetite for a rugged, affordable off-roader.
The new model is expected to share its foundations with Mitsubishi’s Triton pick-up, and reports suggest it could use the Triton’s twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, though the carmaker has yet to confirm the powertrain. Mitsubishi has said the cabin and the front and rear suspension were developed specifically for the SUV, aiming to keep it capable on difficult terrain while comfortable in everyday driving, and it will feature the company’s Super-All Wheel Control system for added stability.
Some distinctive touches are returning too. Among them is the Pajero’s triple meter, once prominently placed on the dashboard, now reimagined in digital form to display altitude, outside temperature and compass information, as well as the vehicle’s pitch and roll angles and the split of torque between the wheels. UAE drivers, however, may have to wait a little longer: Mitsubishi has not confirmed when the new Pajero will reach local showrooms, what specifications will be offered or how much it will cost.
