Egyptian Producer Mohamed Hefzy Named First Winner of AFMI Luminary Award

Egyptian producer and screenwriter Mohamed Hefzy will be the first recipient of the AFMI Luminary Award for Cultural Impact, a new honour presented by the San Francisco Arab Film Festival. He will receive it in San Francisco as guest of honour at the festival’s 30th edition, which runs from November 5 to 14. The award will be handed over at a ceremony ahead of the opening-night screening.

Organisers said the prize recognises Hefzy’s contribution to Arab cinema and his work to bring stories from the region to international audiences. Hefzy said he was “honored to be the first recipient” and added that such recognition matters at a time when Arab voices need to reach global platforms. Launching the prize at the festival’s 30th edition gives it a prominent start, and as its first winner Hefzy sets the benchmark for future recipients.

Few producers in the region have a body of work as large as Hefzy’s. He has more than 60 feature films to his name as a producer and writer, including Clash in 2016, Sheikh Jackson in 2017 and Voy! Voy! Voy! in 2023. His latest project, The Stories, has been chosen as Egypt’s official submission for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category, which adds to his profile ahead of the San Francisco ceremony. The selection puts a Film Clinic title in the running for a nomination in the same category as submissions from other Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia.

Hefzy founded Film Clinic in 2005, and the company has grown into one of the leading production houses in the Middle East and North Africa, with titles selected for Cannes, Venice and Berlin. He has also held major roles in the festival circuit. He served as president of the Cairo International Film Festival for four editions, sat on juries at Sundance and Venice, and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The award continues a busy autumn for Arab cinema on the international stage, with several films from the region entered in the Oscar race and a full calendar of festivals in Egypt and the Gulf. For Hefzy, the San Francisco honour lands during the campaign for The Stories, giving the producer a platform in the United States as Academy voters start to watch the submissions.
