Andy Burnham has become the United Kingdom’s prime minister, the seventh to hold the office in a decade, after meeting King Charles III. He replaces Keir Starmer, who was removed from office roughly a month earlier amid gains by populist opposition forces.
In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham stressed his commitment to restoring stability, declaring that Britain needed to show the world it could regain its footing, and promising the biggest political and economic changes in 40 years.
He outlined immediate priorities including cost-of-living relief measures within the week and a decade-long plan to end rough sleeping, while pledging to maintain strong international partnerships, particularly with Ukraine and the United States.
His cabinet reshuffle installed John Healey as finance minister and Ed Miliband as foreign secretary, part of a Labour strategy to counter the rising Reform UK party, which currently leads in the polls ahead of the 2029 election.
For Gulf investors and sovereign funds with substantial holdings in the UK, a return to political stability in one of their key Western markets would be welcome after years of turnover at the top of British government.
